Surfing and Sandy Beaches in Costa Rica
Surfing beaches are not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you think Costa Rica. Abundant wildlife, lots of lush forest and sandy beaches are closer to the mark. But do not miss out on another of the country – surfing.
The Northern Pacific Coast offers the best and most reliable waves from December to April, when strong winds at sea are combined with management ideal swell. Beginners can ride the waves in Tamarindo, while others are good breaks Witches Rock, Playa Negra and Playa Grande.
Tamarindo is the perfect place for those who do a variety of activities. Besides surfing, there are many activities to offer, including snorkeling, diving, river kayaking and sailing. You can also enjoy cruising on the river and jungle to watch giant leatherback turtles that come here to nest between October and March. Tamarindo Beach is easily accessible with daily flights and buses from San José.
The Caribbean coast is ideal for surfers to travel from November to March. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, offers a crystal clear blue and Costa Rica, the wave heaviest and best: Salsa Brava.
Only suitable for very experienced, this reef break very popular with locals, expatriates and tourists, so expect crowds during the week. Give a break beach near Playa Cocles and the reef-break at Punta Uva adequate, reliable and exciting breaks for the less experienced surfers. Getting to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is relatively simple. Take a bus or a shared shuttle from San Jose to Limon or fly nearby.
The tranquility of the South Pacific Coast is the most reliable travel of the waves between May and November. Few tourists travel to this part of Costa Rica is ideal for those who have their own equipment and looking for a relaxing stay.
The easy-going, small surf town of Dominical is a beautiful beach spanning a mile. He has the right and left breaks suitable for surfers of all levels and with many accommodation options, it is the ideal holiday destination. Cabo Matapolo is another option. Surrounded by jungle, it is often described as one of the most beautiful virgin places left to Costa Rica, with wildlife everywhere you look: monkeys, anteaters and macaws. There are cabins, but no stores or services.
If you work with the taxi by Jiménez, a 4 * 4 is needed – the last 12 miles of road to cross with a series of deep cracks unpaved. The trip is worth it, with two world class breaks in the region and Pan Dulce for beginners.
